On this day in 1940, the Luftwaffe started its biggest daylight attack against England with 1,020 sorties over London alone. Fighter Command & its Allies shot down 56 of the Luftwaffe aircraft in the 705 sorties flown that day. On 2 April 1982, 40 years ago today, Argentina invaded and occupied the Falkland Islands, followed by South Georgia the next day. On 5 April 1982, a naval task force was deployed comprising the Royal Navy, British Army and Royal Air Force. The Falklands conflict lasted 74 days with the Argentine forces surrendering on 14 June 1982 and a total of 907 lost their lives and over 2,000 were wounded.
