What is the Washoe Zephyr? The Washoe Zephyr is a diurnal (daily) wind that occurs in the Sierra and western Nevada during the summer. The term was originally coined by Mark Twain in his 1872 book Roughing It. It is caused when air rises over the Great Basin due to heating. The cooler air over the Sierra then ‘sinks’ into the Great Basin to replace the rising air. After the Zephyr wind crosses Lake Tahoe it next works its way through western Nevada.
