The Martyrdom Anniversary of Nishan-i-Haider recipient Rashid Minhas is being observed today. Born on February 17 1951, he remains the youngest officer to receive the Nishan-e-Haider award and was the first recipient of the highest honour of gallantry for the Pakistan Air Force. On this day, 50 years ago, Pilot Officer Rashid crushed the iniquitous intentions of his instructor pilot Flt Lt Mati-ur-Rahman, who tried to hijack his trainer jet T-33 towards India. Rashid battled to take the controls back and crashed his aircraft before it could reach India.
