It was an unexpected and wild night at the Crane Trust along the Platte River in Nebraska a couple evenings ago when 15,000 sandhill cranes descended to the river at sunset to roost. A few years ago, I worked for weeks from small homemade blinds tucked away on the wetland edge to photograph and film endangered whooping cranes during fall migration on the Saskatchewan prairie.
