One of the most effective tools we have for fighting a grass fire is: a leaf blower! It seems counterintuitive to fight a fire by giving it more oxygen but these gas-powered, backpack leaf blowers push air fast enough it's more like blowing out a candle (lots of candles!) This is a video from yesterday's grass fire at McLean where a BVFD member used a leaf blower to fight 1-2 foot high flames in dried grass.
