On This Day 1972, American actress and activist Jane Fonda caused massive controversy during a visit to the North Vietnamese capital, Hanoi, when she posed for cameras on a North Vietnamese anti-aircraft gun. During the Vietnam War, it was not uncommon for American civil rights activists and humanitarian workers to visit North Vietnam. It was Fonda's posing on an anti-aircraft gun - used to shoot down American planes - that was seen as most controversial, and earned her the nickname 'Hanoi Jane'
