The term “alpha wolf” is outdated science. In the wild, wolf packs are families; parents and their offspring guided by experience, cooperation, and care, not domination. What was once labeled “alpha behavior” came from studies of unrelated wolves in captivity, not natural packs. Decades of field research show that wild wolves lead the way families do: elders guide, parents protect, and pups learn. Leadership is situational, shared, and rooted in survival and not status.
