The 1958 Edsel, built by Ford, featured one of the most unconventional transmission controls ever put into a production car. Instead of a traditional gear lever on the column or floor, the Edsel used push buttons mounted directly in the center of the steering wheel. Drivers selected gears by pressing buttons labeled Drive Reverse Neutral and Park, a layout meant to feel futuristic and intuitive.
