Kiribati = Land of Amazing Singers During a lull in our programme, in between performers, someone who is usually referred to as ‘te aoraki’ (unwell in I-Kiribati) took the mic and sang the nicest rendition of Rod Stewart’s ‘I Don’t’ Want to Talk About It’ I’ve ever heard. In 1893, the Te Baibara (The Bible) of Kiribati then known as Gilbert Islands was published. It was also the first book published in the Kiribati language. On November 19, 1857 Hiram Bingham the Second, a 26 year old American missionary landed on Abaiang Island, one of the 16 main atolls of the country. He knew nothing of the local language.
