This seven-stanza hymn was written by Scandinavian Nikolai Grundtvig in 1837. Perhaps Nikolai's inspiration in emphasizing a church of "living stones" rather than "crumbled spires" came from the ruins of an old cathedral in Copenhagen, the result of the English bombardment during the Napoleonic Wars. Nikolai, the child of a Lutheran pastor, experienced years of doubt and cynicism towards religion during his time at University, but later became a well respected pastor, hymn writer, and educator.
