Up until its rediscovery in the early 2000s, the Burmese roofed turtle was believed to be extinct. While still quite rare in the wild, conservation efforts including breeding programs have been helping to boost this species’ numbers, giving them a chance at survival. Males like this one, who normally have green heads, transform during breeding season to display the bright yellow and black markings you see here.
