This is an early Century Electric repulsion-start induction motor firing up. On startup, it uses a repulsion motor setup with brushes and a commutator to generate high starting torque. Once it comes up to speed, a centrifugal mechanism mechanically shorts the commutator, converting it into a standard induction motor. That distinct clunk you hear is the moment the motor switches over from repulsion start to induction run. No electronics. No relays. Just pure mechanical engineering doing its job.
