Noticing some rust on your brake rotors? Surface rust on rotors can occur even if a vehicle is sitting for a short period of time, but it’s not normally a cause for concern. Simply drive your vehicle as normal for a few minutes and the rust will be wiped away. However, if your vehicle has been sitting for an extended period of time, it‘s possible the rust could have caused pitting on the rotor, leading to an uneven braking surface. In this case, the rotors would most likely need to be replaced.

During a brake job, you may find that the old rotors are rusted onto the wheel hub, making it more difficult to remove them. By properly preparing the wheel hub before installing the new rotor, you’ll prevent this issue from occurring next time. Make sure to clean any rust off the face of the hub, and then apply a small amount of anti-seize to the hub surface.
