This is a leaf-like single-celled organism, Phacus convexus. 🍃 . Phacus convexus is such an elegant swimmer; it beats its hair-like flagellum and pulls itself forward in the water and because of the beating pattern of the flagellum, it twirls while swimming. Doesn’t it look like a falling leaf? It has to swim to find a lit area in the water because it uses sunlight to produce food for itself! . There are over 100 species of Phacus, and Phacus convexus is just one of them. If you check my book c

Euglena phacus trapped between a forest of filamenous cyanobacteria. Phacus swims with a beautiful corkscrew motion. Shot in real time under the microscope at 200x magnification.

This pretty little thing is Phacus helikoides, an alga that swims around like a unicellular ballerina. . There are nearly 200 species of Phacus, and in this clip you can actually see five of them. They swim by beating their whip-like flagellum, searching for the optimal location to produce food for themselves through photosynthesis. .. I hope everyone’s year has started off well. I was gonna skip posting today. I’m struggling with a few things, but I’ll be back on my feet soon. Thank you for rea

These are Phacus gigas, green leaves of the microworld, but one of them has a parasite inside! . Can you see the transparent finger like thing inside the Phacus on the right side? That's the parasite, I don't exactly know what it is, but I believe it's a fungal parasite. . I am growing Phacus gigas in my bathroom with a really powerful grow light, they are photosynthetic organisms just like the plants and when I leave my samples exposed to the light 24/7, they kinda get wild. . And recently, I s

These are Phacus gigas, they are some gorgeous leaf-shaped cuties. One of them is quite healthy but the other one has an unwanted guest inside. Can you spot the difference between them? . There is this sausage-like transparent thing inside one of the cells, that’s a parasite, most likely something fungal. I find some infected individuals like this in one of the ponds I regularly sample. Sometimes, the cells are in really bad condition because of infection, they lose their beautiful green color.

This beauty is a Phacus rotundus, a single-celled ballerina. It swims, rotates and dances its way elegantly in the water. It almost looks unreal, wish they were as big as manta rays. 😔 . Phacus uses sunlight to produce food for itself, and that's why it swims, to find lit areas where it can enjoy the light and synthesize sugar. . I am sorry I will not be writing much today. I didn't post for a couple of days, I am sick. My throat is like the surface of the moon; full of craters. And I am so tir

These are my beautiful Phacus rotundus. They are just mind-blowingly elegant, and they definitely have the swimmer’s body I truly adore! Look how gorgeous they are! Hard to believe these are single-celled organisms! . Phacus species have intriguing shapes, and there are 172 species of them described, the number changes with new studies. But remember there is only one living species of our genus, us, Homo sapiens. Imagine what would happen if there were 171 other human species. . I found them ali

This is a Phacus smulkowskianus, an elegant single-celled organisms magnified 1000x. Normally I don’t have a story behind the names, however, this time with the Phacus smulkowskianus I know how it got its name! . This organism is named by my favorite professor in 1986. Prof. Zakrys works on euglenids, like Phacus, for over 40 years, and Professor named the organism after her husband’s uncle who spoke 9 languages and was helping Professor to translate the original descriptions of euglenids specie

Chloé Savard on Instagram: "Freshwater algae come in the most unexpected of shapes! 💚 This unicellular microorganism is Phacus helikoides which is in Euglenophyta phylum! It’s so precious and graceful 🥹 I don’t find them often so I took 50 videos just to make sure 😂 These green and leaf shaped photosynthetic micro babies are found in freshwater habitats all over the world and mainly feed by synthesizing their own sugars with energy coming from sunlight and carbon dioxide ☀️ Phacus are free s

Chloé Savard on Instagram: "Look at this precious and graceful algae 🥺 This unicellular microorganism is from the Phacus genus and Euglenoohyta phylum! It’s so hypnotizing to observe, it’s barely possible to look at anything else 😍. With some help I was able to determine that it’s a Phacus convexus from the phacus longicauda complex, but for now we’ll just stick with the name of its genus: Phacus! These green and leaf shaped photosynthetic micro babies are found in freshwater habitats all ove
