A storm was wanted for tennis ball-sized hail, but I had a sneaking suspicion that the hail would be markedly larger.The storm I was on was the “second storm,” or a supercell following in the cold air wake of a predecessor. It was “elevated”, sitting atop the prior storm’s chilly exhaust. That would give hailstones a better chance of surviving to the ground with lesser melting. Plus my storm was rotating furiously.
