Left hand signal when going straight to avoid a right hook This is rarely taught when using hand signals for bikers, yet you’ll often see this done by bike commuters. The left hand signal is used to dissuade motorists turning right from cutting them off. If there’s no protected bike lane I even take the lane on intersections just to avoid right hooks. Sometimes it works, sometimes it does not. And I’ve previously posted videos of right hooks despite the early left hand signal by bike commuters.
