During the time of the dinosaurs ~175 million years ago, trees in the genus ‘Ginkgo’ were plentiful on Earth. As the planet cooled and plant communities shifted, members of the genus eventually died off. It was thought that the genus had gone extinct, and would have, had Chinese Buddhist monks not cultivated the trees from around 1,000 years ago. Perhaps they even grew them as bonsai?
