World number one Jannik Sinner stayed cool to reach the second round of Wimbledon while several of his fellow seeds including Italian compatriot Lorenzo Musetti and American hope Jessica Pegula crashed and burned on a sizzling Tuesday.

But a day after Carlos Alcaraz required four-and-a-half hours and five sets to see off Italian veteran Fabio Fognini, the “potential upset” alarm bells rang once more as women’s defending champion Barbora Krejcikova found herself wilting in the southwest London heat against an inspired Alexandra Eala.

Barbora Krejcikova rallied from a set down to win her Wimbledon opener, while Jannik Sinner cruised to victory. Novak Djokovic is set to begin his quest for a 25th Grand Slam title.
