Victoria Mboko is the National Bank Open women's singles champion. The 18-year-old from Toronto defeated Naomi Osaka of Japan 2-6, 6-4, 6-1 at IGA Stadium in Montreal on Thursday.

Mboko is the first Canadian in history to win an NBO singles title in Montreal. She’s just the third Canadian champ overall of the WTA Tour 1000 event in the Open era (since 1968). The same teenager was playing at a tiny event in Croatia one year ago and lost in the first round to a player currently not even in the top 800.

Victoria Mboko did it again on Thursday night, rallying back through the pain of a wrist injury to defeat four-time Grand Slam winner Naomi Osaka 2-6, 6-4, 6-1 in the National Bank Open final, capping a fairytale run that fans across Canada won’t soon forget.
