St. Vincent, Joan Jett and Kim Gordon joined Pat Smear and original Nirvana members Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic onstage for a reunion of sorts at FireAid Thursday. Violet, Jett, and Gordon each subbed in for the late Kurt Cobain.

The surviving members of Nirvana surprise-reunited for the first time since 2020, for the FireAid benefit concert. And to fill in for Kurt Cobain, they tapped some of the same women who’ve previously taken his place.

Then came what was perhaps the biggest surprise: Violet Grohl, Dave’s 18-year-old daughter, singing lead vocals on Nirvana’s In Utero highlight “All Apologies.” Her vocals were strong and well-suited for the song, and while the magnitude of the Kia Forum’s crowd wasn’t lost on her, she was remarkably comfortable in front of the massive crowd.

FireAid had some surprises in store, but none bigger than the first reunion from Nirvana's surviving members in over a decade.
