Los Angeles County's top emergency manager said Saturday the county's overhaul of its emergency notification system is nearly complete after it sent out a succession of faulty emergency alerts urging millions of residents across Los Angeles to prepare to evacuate amid the ongoing firestorm.

"It’s hard to see, because there’s so much pain and suffering,” said one local, who dropped off toys at the Westwood Recreation Center in West Los Angeles.

While the message was intended for residents of Woodland Hills, officials say the registration location of the phones might have caused a wider distribution.

Emergency evacuation alerts have gone off the rails, pinging people seemingly at random. Experts say that such errors can sow mistrust in the alert system, potentially endangering residents down the line.

An alert designated to warn people of a fire northwest of downtown Los Angeles was sent county-wide, according to a local official. At the time, emergency management was monitoring the Kenneth Fire which triggered its own evacuations.

Beverley Hills residents received “another evacuation alert from the LA County Fire Department” but officials “confirmed this was another error."
