For this repository to support 3.9, Blender would need to support building with Python 3.9 as the linked Python version. This is a C/C++ extension we are talking about after all.

The final version of Python 3.9 is scheduled for release in early October, so Python maintainers believe it makes sense to remove the 2.7 compatibility layers.
