The political spotlight this year is on Virginia, which kicked off its closely-watched statewide election cycle with primaries that set November’s ballot.

Tuesday, June 17, was primary day in Virginia. Thousands of voters across the state cast their ballots from 6 a.m. until 7 p.m.

Virginia Democrats selected former Del. Jay Jones as their attorney general nominee Tuesday evening ahead of the November off-year election, widely seen as a political bellwether. Jones defeated Henrico Commonwealth’s Attorney Shannon Taylor,

State Senator Ghazala Hashmi has secured the Democratic nomination for Lieutenant Governor of Virginia. Democrats nominated their pick for lieutenant governor from a field of six candidates. She will go on to face Republican nominee John Reid in November.
