A Levi’s spokesperson declined to comment Wednesday about the cultural debate that has developed from its new ads with Beyoncé, and American Eagle’s new campaign with Sweeney. Media requests to AEO and its outside public relations firm Shadow were not acknowledged.

The president is the latest right-wing figure to praise the ‘Euphoria’ star for appearing in an ad described as “racialized dog whistle.”

The crux of the campaign is Sweeney’s assertion that her jeans are good, but the whole thing rests on a pun: She’s also talking about her genes. “Genes are passed down from parents to offspring,” she says in one video, “often determining traits like hair color, personality, and even eye color. My jeans are blue.”
