Elena Rybakina, the 2023 BNP Paribas Open champion and seventh seed in this year's event, didn't have to sweat too much in her first match in a drive for another Indian Wells title. Rybakina cruised to a 6-3, 6-3 win over the Netherlands' Suzan Lamens. Rybakina, from Kazakhstan, took advantage of six double faults by Lamens.

Rybakina returns to Indian Wells and learns her path after a health setback didn't allow her to defend her title last year.
