Tropical storm alerts remain in effect for portions of the eastern Florida coastline, and at least two states have declared preemptive states of emergency as a looming storm system remains on its way to becoming Hurricane Imelda,
Tropical Storm Imelda has formed this afternoon, as of the 2 PM advisory form the National Hurricane Center. Imelda, which is currently sitting over the Bahamas, has max winds of 40 mph and is moving North at 9 mph as of the 5 PM advisory from NHC.
Hurricane Humberto has strengthened into a Category 4 hurricane, forecasters warning of dangerous surf and rip currents in parts of the northeastern Caribbean and Bermuda.
Tropical Storm Imelda is expected to form Sunday, Sept. 28. Portions of Florida's east coast are under a tropical storm watch.
The National Hurricane Center's forecast track warns a new system, to be named Imelda, could stall offshore and dump heavy rain on the Southeast.
The tropics are staying active. While Hurricane Gabrielle is moving away, there are two waves with a high chance for development.
A low-category hurricane, soon to be named Imelda, may reach coastal Georgia and the Carolinas early next week, the National Weather Service (NWS) predicts. Or at least, a tropical storm near or at hurricane-intensity.
