A union that represents some Montreal Amazon workers said it will petition a court to compel the company to reopen the warehouses and reverse the job cuts.

Amazon.com Inc.’s decision to close all seven of its warehouses in the Canadian province of Quebec and terminate more than 1,900 workers is prompting legal action from the affected union.

François-Philippe Champagne, the federal industry minister, is calling for a review of Ottawa's "business relationship" with Amazon after the company said it will close all seven of its warehouses in Quebec.

Canada has warned Amazon.com that it is reviewing business ties with the company’s cloud-computing unit following Amazon’s decision to shut down its warehouses in Quebec, leading to the layoff of 1,700 workers.

After Amazon announced it would shutter its Quebec warehouses, costing 1,700 workers their jobs, a Canadian union said it would strike back.

Amazon is facing growing backlash in Quebec following its January 2025 decision to shutter all seven of its warehouses in the province. The closures, set to unfold over the next two months, will eliminate approximately 4,500 jobs, including full-time positions and subcontractors.

The Confédération des syndicats nationaux (CSN) is accusing Amazon of closing its Quebec facilities because workers at its Laval, Que., warehouse unionized. The union is now planning legal action against Amazon and asking Quebecers to boycott the company.

A Quebec labour group is urging governments and the public to boycott Amazon because the online retail giant announced the closure of its seven warehouses in the province a few months after workers at one of the facilities voted to unionize.
