As dangerously hot air bakes parts of the Southwest, forecasters are flagging elevated odds of significant wildland fire activity.

Santa Rosa leaders approved updates to the city’s fire hazard areas over objections from some residents who raised questions about the implications for their properties.

A fast-moving fire dubbed the Grand Fire erupted in Chino Hills, California, on Wednesday evening, forcing evacuations, road closures and a major emergency response as flames spread near residential areas.

The Highway 82 fire in Brantley County and Pineland Road fire near Florida are part of a regional wildfire outbreak.

The larger fire is burning on U.S. 27 west of Pembroke Pines. State officials are calling it the Max Road Fire. As of Monday morning, it was burning around 4,800 acres and was only 20% contained, according to the Florida Department of Agriculture’s interactive wildfire map.
