If you want to use your MacBook in clamshell mode without being hooked up to the charger, you'll need to prevent the machine from sleeping or shutting down when the lid is closed.
For some users, the new 16-inch MacBook Pro does not always charge when completely shut down, and others are dealing with external monitors not waking correctly in clamshell mode.

Sleep will put your MacBook to sleep as soon as you close the lid, even if there's another display connected. This is great if you use an external display but never use your MacBook in clamshell mode.
