Amazon has attributed the outage to a domain name system issue. DNS is the service that translates internet addresses into machine-readable IP addresses that connects browsers and apps with websites and underlying web services. DNS errors disrupt the translation process, interrupting the connection.
More than 1,000 companies had 6.5 million reports of disruption, including Snapchat, Reddit, Roblox and Lloyds bank.
LONDON — Internet users around the world faced widespread disruption early on Monday because of a problem at Amazon’s cloud computing service that took down dozens of major online services, including social media site Snapchat, the Roblox and Fortnite video games and chat app Signal.

On DownDetector, a website that tracks online outages, users reported issues with Snapchat, Roblox, Fortnite online broker Robinhood, the McDonald’s app and many other services.
The effects of the Amazon web services outages were being felt locally in the Capital Region. Problems with Amazon’s cloud computing service affected things like Ring doorbell cameras and Amazon orders, Snapchat and games like Roblox and Fortnite, as well as Disney+, Lyft, the McDonald’s app, and Venmo, to name just a few.
The issue impacted thousands of websites and apps across the globe. The website DownDetector showed users reporting issues with Reddit, Snapchat, Ring, Roblox, Fortnite, Amazon, Starbucks, Facebook and more. Coinbase, the largest U.S. cryptocurrency exchange, said its services was unavailable because of the AWS outage.
An Amazon Web Services outage is causing major disruptions around the world. The service provides remote computing services to many governments, universities and companies, including The Associated Press.
