Trump's federalization of the National Guard has sparked a fierce debate across party lines, as Democrats denounce the push as unlawful and beyond the scope of his authority.

The US Supreme Court has rejected the Trump administration's bid to deploy National Guard troops in the Chicago area, over the objections of local and state officials.

Illinois Governor JB Pritzker called the ruling "an important step in curbing the Trump Administration's consistent abuse of power and slowing Trump’s march toward authoritarianism."
