Mount Semeru, Java's tallest and most active volcano, erupted violently on November 19, 2025, sending shockwaves through East Java and far beyond. Towering at 3,676 meters, Semeru looms over villages where thousands depend on the land for their livelihoods.
According to Indonesia's BNPB, 187 hikers were trapped along the popular Ranu Kumbolo trail when the Mount Semeru eruption occurred.
The volcano spewed ash clouds as high as 2 km (1 mile) above the mountain's peak, the agency said, adding residents should keep to a 2.5 km distance away due to risks.
