When people tried to talk to ChatGPT on Tuesday morning, for instance, they were not greeted by the usual overly friendly chatbot. Instead, they saw a short error message: “Please unblock challenges.cloudflare.com to proceed”.

Major internet platforms are experiencing service disruptions on the morning of Nov. 18, following a reported outage by Cloudflare.

Web services company Cloudflare said it is aware of problems impacting "multiple customers" amid reports of outages at apps including X.

As of this posting the cause of the outage remained unclear. The CNBC story quoted a Cloudflare spokesperson as saying a “spike in unusual traffic” to one of its services around 6:20 a.m. EST led to some traffic passing across the Cloudflare network to experience errors.

Services like Cloudflare underpin much of the internet, working invisibly in the background. But when things go wrong, it can have major impacts.
