The USDA could also tap into contingency funds to keep SNAP operating, but it would cost about $8 billion to keep everyone’s benefits running in November. The size of the agency’s contingency fund is closer to $6 billion, according to CNN.
The program, which will be run by the state’s Department of Employment and Economic Development, will have around 400 staff and is expected to cost about $1.6 billion in its first year.
The National WIC Association is asking the Trump administration for more emergency funds to keep providing the benefit for mothers and babies.
Officials said the benefits from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program or SNAP will not be issued next month unless the government shutdown ends.
